About Tacoma City Ballet

Tacoma City Ballet endeavors to provide excellent comprehensive classical ballet training for dancers in the Puget Sound Region.  A carefully graded syllabus, comprising the techniques of the Danish, English, French, Italian, and Russian schools of classical ballet, is taught.  Contemporary techniques are also included in the curriculum to strengthen the body, encourage flexibility, and correct anatomical issues.  Tacoma City Ballet also offers an excellent Open Class Program that encompasses beginning through advanced ballet classes specifically structured for adults.

Beginning at a young age, performance skills are taught through creative class exercises and participation in the annual School Demonstration.  Young dancers are also offered the opportunity to audition for children’s roles in Tacoma City Ballet’s annual season performances that include: The Haunted Theatre,  The Nutcracker, and Storybook Ballet Theatre.  In 2012, the Tacoma City Ballet Children’s Ballet Theatre Company was created combining the Junior Company, specifically established for children 8-12 years old, with the Senior Performing Company.  As dancers advance technically and artistically, they may audition for the Senior Performing Company.

In 1955, Miss Jan Collum originally founded the school as The Jan Collum School of Classical Ballet.  This season Tacoma City Ballet celebrates her legacy with its 57th anniversary.  Whether you choose to pursue a professional career in dance or desire to sculpt body and soul, the art of classical ballet will transcend your whole being for the rest of your life.  It is Tacoma City Ballet’s privilege to create an environment which furthers artistic development and growth in the human spirit, while pursuing our mission to instill in all of our students confidence in their physical being, a love for all arts, and a sense of accomplishment that will last a lifetime.
