Dress Code

Tacoma City Ballet has a required dress code for each class level.  This ensures that the instructor is able to see your dancer’s alignment and positioning. Adhering to the dress code also teaches students discipline and helps with overall focus and energy. By “dressing the part,” dancers feel like dancers. Dress codes help to minimize distractions and help give classes a unified look.

Tacoma City Ballet has selected uniforms for each class.  It is important for all uniform items to be designed specifically as dance-wear.  If you do not already have these items in your dancer’s wardrobe, The Dance Collection (with locations in Tacoma and Federal Way) keeps our required dress code items in stock and their staff will know exactly what your dancer needs for classes at Tacoma City Ballet.

Hair

All dancers in Pre-Elementary through Company class levels must wear their hair in a neat, classical bun worn at the crown of the head with no bangs, as shown below.  Pre-Ballet dancers are allowed to wear a ponytail and bangs.  If your dancer’s hair is too short, put as much of it up as possible and bobby-pin the remaining loose hair.  If your dancer has bangs, gel or bobby-pin them back for class.  No hair or bun accessories are allowed for any level.  If you have questions, please ask the receptionist, instructor or class helper to show you how to create the ballet bun.

Ponytail

Put hair in a high ponytail,
slicking bangs back if necessary

270_Twist

Twist or braid the ponytail

270_Roll_Bun

Wrap into a bun,
pinning with bobby pins along the way.

214_Neaten_Bun

Cover with hairnet and finish by
smoothing out wispies with hairspray or gel.

Uniform

Uniforms consist of tights, shoes, and leotard (or shirt, for the gentlemen) only; no skirts, shorts, sweaters, etc. will be permitted in class.  All dancers must wear clothing over their tights and leotard when entering or exiting the building.  Ballet slipper must not be worn outside the building.  No nail polish, temporary tattoo, or jewelry (aside from small, post-stye earrings) is to be worn in class or rehearsal.  Dancers level Elementary 1 and up who are not prepared for class with the appropriate hair and/or attire will be excused from class to complete their preparation.
